Breast self examination

One visit Breast Clinic

Few things cause more anxiety in women than the discovery of a breast abnormality.

Our One Visit Breast Clinic allows patients to be examined by a specialist and undergo all the necessary tests, including mammography, and ultrasound, to reach a diagnosis within an hour or two, significantly reducing the length of time this process usually takes.

Should breast cancer be discovered, a treatment plan can be discussed with the consultant surgeon, consultant oncologist and breast care nurse and implemented immediately. All of this takes place during one visit which should last no more than two hours, thereby reducing delay and distress to a minimum.

What will happen to you?

Firstly our Consultant Breast Surgeon will talk to you, examine you and if necessary request a mammogram or ultrasound of your breast. The results of these examinations will be immediately available from our Consultant Radiologist.

The result of this will usually indicate the nature of the problem. You will be seen again by the surgeon and given your results. If there is evidence of cancer we will discuss with you a plan for your ongoing management and treatment. This may include further tests.

What does each stage involve?

The referral

If your GP wishes to refer you to our One Visit Breast Clinic he or she will either write a letter which you will bring with you, having booked an appointment, or your GP will contact the hospital on your behalf.

The examination

The Consultant Breast Surgeon accompanied by the Breast Care Nurse will talk to you and examine you. This may enable him to immediately allay any fears you may have or send you for further tests.

The mammogram

This is a specialised x-ray of the breast which normally would not be carried out on women below the age of 35 unless specifically requested by your consultant. This may reveal to the consultant radiologist abnormalities which could indicate the need for further investigation.

The ultrasound

This is a method of using ultrasonic waves to scan tissue which should enable the consultant radiologist, without the use of radiation, to make a diagnosis and to decide whether a further examination is required. This is the preferred method of investigation for women under the age of 35 but is often used to compliment mammography in women above this age.
