Renal medicine, also known as nephrology, is a medical specialty that focuses on the care of patients with kidney problems.
Our specialist renal consultants, known also as nephrologists, diagnose and treat conditions where kidney function is impaired such as acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease can be caused by different diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension) alongside inherited conditions such as polycystic kidney disease. The management of hypertension is an integral part of their expert practice.
Renal physicians also provide care for patients with kidney disease where there is no impairment of kidney function, including microscopic haematuria, proteinuria and nephrotic syndrome; patients who have kidney involvement in multisystem immune disease such as systemic lupus and ANCA vasculitis; and patients with tubular or other metabolic disorders affecting the kidney. Renal physicians work closely with urologists to provide care for patients with recurrent urinary tract infections and kidney stone disease, amongst other things.
