Biography

Dr Colette Griffin is a Consultant Neurologist with a specialist interest in traumatic brain injury (TBI). She has developed a comprehensive private TBI service over the last ten years. She has both an international and a national patient base.

Dr Griffin’s interest in sport (she is a keen sailor and skier, and she also follows her local rugby team) has led her to develop a sub-specialist interest in the field of mild TBI in sport. Non specialists refer to mild TBI as “concussion.” Dr Griffin regularly reviews patients who have sustained a mild TBI. She also reviews sports players concerned regarding the impact of repeated mild TBIs. She gives talks at local rugby clubs regarding the prevention of mild TBI.

Dr Griffin developed the busy TBI service at St George’s Hospital Major Trauma Centre 15 years ago. The dedicated TBI service and TBI beds enable seamless care of patients from NITU through their acute and neurorehabilitation pathway, through to home. It includes community and vocational rehabilitation services. She remains strategic lead on a part time basis.

Dr Griffin is involved in education and teaching. She regularly teaches healthcare professionals, medical and post graduate students, in addition to other neurology consultants. She has developed the TBI curriculum for neurologists in training. She has also developed the highly acclaimed St George’s University TBI short course.

Dr Griffin undertook placements at both Harvard Medical School (Brigham and Women’s Hospital) and The Mayo Clinic during her undergraduate training. She undertook her neurological training at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, The Royal London Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital.

Dr Griffin was awarded her MD by The University of London in the use of advanced MRI techniques in Multiple Sclerosis. She has published over thirty peer reviewed papers, and two invited TBI book chapters. She has recently been appointed as TBI series guest editor for Advances in Clinical Neuroscience and Rehabilitation.

Dr Griffin is involved in multiple TBI research studies. Her academic interest is in the field of advanced MRI techniques and their ability to provide prognostic information in TBI. Dr Griffin is regularly invited to lecture both nationally and internationally.
