PIP Silicone Gel Breast Implants

The New Victoria used a small number of PIP implants over a short period of time, predominantly during 2001 and 2002. Given the considerable publicity surrounding these implants which has not always been helpful to patients, we believe it is necessary to set out the facts.

The implants were approved for use in the UK by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) however, were withdrawn from use in the UK in October 2010 following concerns over their safety.

As a result of the recent publicity an Expert Advisory Group, led by the NHS Medical Director, Sir Bruce Keogh, was asked to review all the available data in order to offer definitive advice. The main findings of this expert group were:

  • There is no causal link between these implants and cancer
  • Although the rupture of implants or leakage of material can result in inflammation, there is no clear evidence that these problems are more serious in relation to PIP implants than other implants, or that they result in increased long-term health risks
  • In view of the above and given that all surgery carries an element of risk, the expert group do not recommend routine removal of these implants

At The New Victoria Hospital we are committed to the safety and well-being of our patients and fully accept the duty of care we have to all of our patients. As such, we are offering patients who have received PIP implants at The New Victoria Hospital and who feel they would benefit from a consultation with a Consultant Plastic Surgeon the opportunity to avail themselves of this, free of charge.
