Primarily, the Hospital is looking for a hands-on person with a strategic mind-set to assist the Executive Management Team in delivering its objectives. The role reports to the Chief Executive.

The role of the MD includes:

  • Responsibility for ensuring the successful delivery of medical services to meet the GMC regulatory requirements and the CQC Fundamental standards.
  • Providing inspirational and dynamic professional management and leadership for the medical workforce.
  • Creating a culture for compassionate care to thrive.
  • Leading the continuing transformation of clinical services and, in conjunction with the Director of Clinical Services and the Integrated Governance and Risk Manager, jointly lead on the clinical governance agenda.
  • Supporting the Governance team in the management of Practising Privileges.

The Responsible Officer post (RO) is responsible for ensuring that all doctors work within a managed environment, in which their performance, conduct and behaviour are monitored against agreed national standards.

The role of the RO includes responsibilities for affiliated doctors only:

  • To ensure that the doctors operating under practising privileges at the Hospital take part in annual appraisals.
  • To make positive recommendations to the GMC that a doctor is up to date, fit to practise and should be revalidated.
  • To request a deferral when they need more information to make a recommendation about a doctor.
  • To notify the GMC that a doctor has failed to engage with any of the local systems or processes (such as appraisal) that support revalidation.
  • To establish and implement procedures to investigate concerns about a doctor’s fitness to practise raised by patients or staff of the Hospital or arising from another source.
  • Where a doctor with practising privileges at the Hospital is subject to conditions imposed by or undertakings agreed with the GMC, to monitor compliance with those conditions.
  • To maintain secure records of a doctor’s fitness to practise evaluations including appraisals and any other investigations or assessments.

As stated above, the RO role can be incorporated in the MD role, however it would be considered as a standalone post for any consultant who may be interested. The MD/RO role requires a commitment of 2-3 PAs per week; hours are flexed across a month.
