X-rays are one of the most common and widely used imaging techniques in medicine, allowing healthcare professionals to assess the internal structures of the body with clarity and precision.

Often used as a first step in diagnosing conditions related to bones, joints, lungs, and certain soft tissues, X-rays are a vital tool in ensuring prompt and accurate treatment.

At New Victoria Hospital, our experienced Radiology Consultants and skilled Radiographers use the latest digital technology to deliver clear, detailed images.

Our specialist X-ray service is for those needing an X-ray scan in London and want to receive fast and effective imaging services from a team of highly trained professionals.

What is an X-ray?

An X-ray is a quick imaging test that uses a small dose of ionising radiation to capture images of the inside of the body. The images produced can highlight changes or abnormalities in bones and certain tissues, such as the lungs, digestive tract, or blood vessels.

A typical X-ray scan is painless and takes only a few minutes to perform. The body part being examined is positioned between the X-ray machine and a digital detector, which records the image for review by a Consultant Radiologist.

When Are X-rays Recommended?

X-rays may be recommended in a wide range of clinical scenarios. Your GP or Consultant may refer you for an X-ray if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms as an example:

  • Persistent or severe bone or joint pain

  • Difficulty moving a limb or joint

  • Swelling or tenderness following an injury

  • Chronic cough or chest pain

  • Suspected respiratory infection

  • Abdominal discomfort that may require investigation of the bowel or other organs

At New Victoria Hospital, our Radiology team works closely with other departments, including Orthopaedics, Respiratory Medicine, and General Surgery, to ensure that imaging is carried out promptly as part of your overall care plan.

What to Expect from Your Private X-ray Appointment

An X-ray at New Victoria Hospital is a straightforward and safe procedure. You may be asked to remove certain items of clothing or jewellery that could obscure the image. Depending on the area of the body being scanned, a protective lead apron may be provided to shield other areas from unnecessary radiation.

For some types of X-ray, such as gastrointestinal issues, you may be asked to follow specific preparation instructions, such as fasting or taking a contrast agent. This will be communicated at the time of your booking.

The scan itself takes only a few minutes, and you will typically be able to return to your normal activities immediately after your appointment. A Consultant Radiologist will review and interpret the images, and a report will be sent promptly to your referring doctor.

Here at New Victoria Hospital, our dedicated and highly experienced Imaging Department is committed to providing an exceptional standard of care for all patients undergoing X-ray diagnostics.

Using state-of-the-art digital imaging equipment, we deliver quick and accurate results while ensuring your comfort and safety throughout the process.
