Free weight loss consultations

Our free mini consultations for weight loss surgery begin next Saturday with Consultant Bariatric, Upper Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Professor Marcus Reddy. In this article, Professor Reddy talks more about the different bariatric surgery procedures you can expect to undergo for weight loss.

Weight loss surgery options at New Victoria Hospital

There are a number of bariatric surgeries available at New Victoria Hospital including:

  • Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Laparoscopic Gastric Banding
  • Gastric Balloon

During Professor Reddy’s consultations, patients can expect to be informed about details of these procedures and any questions will be answered during their appointment.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

A Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is a procedure that reduces the size of your stomach. If you have a high body mass index with some other medical problems you may be suitable for this surgery.

During a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, a tube is inserted into your stomach though your esophagus, whilst a telescope is placed in your abdomen by your surgeon to guide the tube.

Your stomach will be stapled and any excess stomach will be removed. A Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure generally takes 1 -3 hours and your recovery time is usually 2- 3 days. Most people that undergo this procedure lose over half of their excess body weight.

Laparoscopic Gastric Banding

A Gastric Band is an inflatable silicone band that is inserted at the top of your stomach.

Your surgeon will pass the band around the top of your stomach that will create a smaller pouch with the lower part of your stomach folded over the band and stitched to the pouch.

A gastric banding procedure should take no longer than two hours and your recovery time for this procedure should only be a couple of days.

Gastric Balloon

A Gastric Balloon is an inflatable silicone balloon that is inserted into the stomach.  An endoscope will then be placed through your throat and into your stomach where the balloon is secured.

A gastric balloon will last in the stomach for nine months and can help you lose weight as you will feel full sooner than usual. The gastric balloon procedure is often used to prepare you for weight loss surgery.

A gastric balloon procedure should take no longer than one hour and the recovery time for this procedure should only be a couple of days.
