Information for Parents Whose Children Are Having an MRI Scan

WHAT IS AN MRI SCAN

An MRI scan uses a magnetic field rather than x rays to take images.  The MRI scanner is a hollow machine with a tube running through the middle.  Your child will lie on a bed that slides into the tube.  The scan usual lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour.

WHY DOES MY CHILD NEED AN MRI SCAN?

Your child may need this scan so that his or her doctors can get detailed images to help gain diagnostic information.  The information gained is then used to plan any treatment your child may need.

WHAT DOES THE SCAN INVOLVE?

Your child will need to lie on the bed for the scan; a piece of equipment is placed over the area being imaged. When your child is in the correct position the radiographer will move the bed inside the scanner and then leave the room. You may stay with your child in the scanning room if he or she so desires.  Your child will be given a call button to press if they feel uncomfortable or wish to stop the scan at any time.

Your child will be provided with ear protectors to wear for the duration of the scan as the scanner makes continuous, loud knocking noises. Throughout the scan the radiographer will consistently communicate with your child.

Your child may bring along a CD to listen to during the scan or we can play the radio for them.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS?

There are no known risks associated with MRI scans at present, providing all safety checks are carried out.  MRI scans are not suitable for people with certain implants such as pacemakers, surgical clips or some metallic implants. Should you or your child have any implants this must be made known to the Imaging Department prior to your child’s scan date.

When booking the scan you will be given a safety questionnaire for you and your child to fill in prior to the appointment.  The radiographer will check the questionnaire with you and your child before you enter the scanning room.  If you are going into the scanning room with your child, you will need to leave metallic objects such as jewellery, watches, keys and bankcards with metallic strips outside.

If your child is over the age of 12 or has started her periods, her pregnancy status will be checked prior to the scan.  If there is any likelihood that you may be in the first trimester of pregnancy, we would suggest that you do not accompany your child into the scanning room.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE SCAN?

After the scan a written report with the findings will be sent to your child's referring consultant usually within 48 hours. Please make a follow up appointment with your referring Consultant to receive the results.
