Mr Abhishek Reekhaye is a Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon specialising in kidney and upper urinary tract conditions, with a particular focus on advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgery. His main areas of expertise include kidney cancer, small renal masses, kidney-sparing surgery, upper tract urothelial cancer, PUJ obstruction and ureteric reconstruction. He offers robotic partial nephrectomy, radical nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy, pyeloplasty, and complex ureteric reconstructive procedures.

He is a substantive Consultant at the Frimley Renal Cancer Centre, one of the highest-volume kidney cancer centres in the United Kingdom. He works within a specialist multidisciplinary team managing both straightforward and complex kidney and upper urinary tract conditions. His practice places particular emphasis on preserving kidney function wherever possible, using minimally invasive techniques and supporting a smooth, early recovery after surgery.

Mr Reekhaye has developed particular expertise in retroperitoneal robotic surgery. This approach reaches the kidney directly from the back, avoiding entry into the abdominal cavity. For appropriately selected patients, it can reduce disturbance to the bowel, facilitate earlier recovery, and allow a short hospital stay. He is experienced in tailoring the surgical approach to the position and complexity of each tumour rather than relying on a single technique for every patient.

He graduated in medicine from Newcastle University, before completing his higher specialist training in urology within the South London training programme. He was ranked second nationally during selection for higher specialist training. Alongside his clinical training, he completed an MCh in Minimally Invasive Surgery (Urology), which was awarded with Distinction.

Following completion of his specialist training, Mr Reekhaye undertook two post-CCT fellowships. At King’s College Hospital, a major trauma centre, he gained additional experience in complex urological trauma and reconstruction. He then completed a fellowship at the Frimley Renal Cancer Centre, focusing on high-volume robotic kidney surgery and complex upper urinary tract procedures. Before returning to Frimley as a substantive Consultant, he worked as a Locum Consultant at the Royal Free Hospital Kidney Cancer Centre in London.

Mr Reekhaye has performed a high volume of robotic renal and upper urinary tract procedures and is experienced in managing complex tumours, patients with a solitary kidney and those in whom preservation of kidney function is especially important. He takes a personalised approach to treatment, discussing surveillance, biopsy, ablation and surgery where appropriate, so that patients understand the available choices and can make a decision that suits their circumstances and priorities.

He is actively involved in research, teaching and surgical innovation. His academic interests include robotic partial nephrectomy, retroperitoneal surgery, enhanced recovery, surgery in patients with obesity, and outcomes following kidney cancer surgery. His work has been presented nationally and internationally, including research accepted for the European Robotic Urology Symposium. He has collaborated with the European Association of Urology (EAU) Young Academic Urologists Renal Cell Carcinoma Working Group and was awarded the Northwestern University Genitourinary (GU) Robotic Reconstruction Scholarship in 2025.

Mr Reekhaye also contributes to the training of surgeons in robotic renal surgery and has taught on specialist courses at Frimley. He is committed to clear communication and recognises that a diagnosis involving the kidney or urinary tract can be unsettling. During consultations, he aims to explain the diagnosis and treatment options in straightforward language, allowing time for questions and ensuring that each patient feels fully involved in their care.

Research

Mr Reekhaye has published and presented nationally and internationally on kidney cancer, robotic renal surgery and upper urinary tract reconstruction. His current research interests include retroperitoneal robotic partial nephrectomy, kidney surgery in patients with obesity, enhanced recovery and surgical outcomes. His work on retroperitoneal robotic partial nephrectomy in patients with BMI ≥40 kg/m² was accepted for presentation at ERUS 2026 in Padua. He is also involved in teaching robotic renal surgery and is faculty for the Frimley retroperitoneal robotic partial nephrectomy course.
