HyCoSy Scan Information

Before Your Appointment

  • You can eat and drink normally before the scan.
  • If your doctor prescribed antibiotics, please take them exactly as instructed.
  • It is very important that you are not pregnant when this test is done.
  • For this reason, do not have sexual intercourse from the first day of your last period until after the scan
  • The procedure may cause mild cramping (similar to period pain).
  • You may take a painkiller such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen about one hour before your appointment if you wish.

What is a HyCoSy Scan?

A Hysterosalpingo-Contrast Sonography (HyCoSy) is a type of ultrasound scan used to look at:

  • Your uterus (womb)
  • Your fallopian tubes

The scan helps doctors check:

  • If your fallopian tubes are open or blocked
  • The shape and size of your womb

This test is commonly used when investigating fertility problems.

Good to know:
✔ The test does not use X-rays or radiation

What Happens During the Scan?

The appointment usually takes about 30 minutes and is done as an outpatient procedure

  1. You will be asked to change into a hospital gown.
  2. The doctor will explain the procedure and answer any questions.
  3. A speculum will be placed in the vagina (similar to a smear test).
  4. A thin tube (catheter) will be passed through the cervix into the uterus.
  5. The speculum is removed and an internal ultrasound probe is gently inserted into the vagina.
  6. A small amount of fluid is passed through the tube into the womb.
  7. A second contrast fluid is used so the doctor can see the fallopian tubes on the ultrasound.

The scan is performed by a Consultant Radiologist with assistance from a member of the imaging team.

After the Scan

Most people feel well enough to go home straight away, but you may prefer to rest for the rest of the day

It is normal to have:

  • Watery vaginal discharge (sometimes slightly blood-stained)
  • Light vaginal bleeding
  • Mild period-like cramps
  • Feeling slightly dizzy or sick

These symptoms usually last 24–48 hours

Please use a sanitary pad if needed.
Do not use tampons immediately after the procedure.

Possible Risks

Serious problems after a HyCoSy scan are rare

However, contact your GP or doctor if you experience:

  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Fever or chills
  • Fainting or vomiting
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge

These symptoms could indicate infection or another complication.

Getting Your Results

Your scan will be reviewed by the Consultant Radiologist.

The results will be sent to your Consultant or GP, usually within 48 hours
They will discuss the results with you at your next appointment.
