Biography
Dr Israa Al-Shakarchi is a highly experienced Consultant Rheumatologist with over a decade in consultant practice and more than 20 years in medicine. She is known for her compassionate, thorough, and patient-centred approach, combining clear communication with evidence-based, personalised care.
Dr Al-Shakarchi graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 2004, following a BSc (Hons) in Physiology from University College London. In 2010, she completed an MSc in Rheumatology with distinction at King’s College London, receiving the Abbott Prize for the best research project on osteoporosis. That same year, she achieved the Specialty Certificate Examination in Rheumatology, and in 2018 was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
She completed her specialist training within the South London Deanery, gaining experience at leading centres including King’s College Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’, and St George’s Hospitals. Since 2013, she has held a substantive NHS Consultant Rheumatologist post at Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust, where she also plays an active role in medical education.
Dr Al-Shakarchi provides expert diagnosis and management across the full spectrum of rheumatological conditions, with particular expertise in autoimmune inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, spondyloarthropathies); connective tissue diseases (lupus, Sjögren’s syndrome, systemic sclerosis, mixed connective tissue disease, myosotis); crystal arthritis (gout, pseudogout); osteoarthritis (joint degeneration and wear-and-tear); osteopenia and osteoporosis (bone loss and fracture prevention); polymyalgia rheumatica; soft tissue rheumatic conditions (tendonitis, bursitis, shoulder pain, tennis/golfer’s elbow); and vasculitis (giant cell arteritis, ANCA-associated vasculitis).
She is highly skilled in joint and soft tissue injections, integrating these procedures into tailored, evidence-based treatment plans. In addition to her clinical work, Dr Al-Shakarchi is deeply committed to education and training. She served as Training Programme Director for Internal Medicine Trainees for over seven years and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. She continues to contribute to the development of future healthcare professionals while maintaining an active interest in clinical research.
Dr Al-Shakarchi has presented her work at national and international conferences across the UK, Europe, and the USA, and has published in peer-reviewed medical journals.
She is passionate about providing a positive patient experience founded on empathy, collaboration, and trust. Known for her attentive, holistic care, Dr Al-Shakarchi consistently receives excellent feedback from patients and colleagues alike.
