Biography

Professor Rajan Sharma is a consultant cardiologist with a subspecialty interest in echocardiography, heart valve disease, cardio oncology and functional assessment of coronary artery disease. He qualified from Guys and St Thomas United Medical School of Guy’s and St Thomas’ and trained in a number of London institutions as well as Southampton University Hospital Cardiothoracic Unit. He is Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Clinical Director at St Georges Hospital NHS Trust and has undertaken a number of leadership roles within the NHS.

Dr Sharma is highly experienced in dealing with a range of cardiac disorders including coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathy, hypertension and arrhythmia. He commonly sees patients with a range of symptoms including chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations and blackouts. He also has a specialist interest in preventative cardiology and microvascular angina.

Professor Sharma sees patients with a range of presentations including chest discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness, blackouts and palpitations. He also sees patients wanting to know their individual cardiac risk. He is keen to provide a holistic approach to management with lifestyle advise in conjunction with diagnostic testing and any medication or intervention.

Professor Sharma is considered a national and international expert in complex echocardiography (ultrasound scanning of the heart). This includes transoesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography, deformation imaging, contrast echocardiography and three dimensional echocardiography. These techniques allow detailed evaluation of patients with suspected heart muscle disease, coronary artery disease, and valvular heart disease. He is a recognised expert of stress echocardiography for the DVLA and CAA. 

Dr Sharma's main areas of research include the dynamic assessment of coronary and valvular heart disease and assessing cardiovascular risk in specific population groups. He has over 100 peer reviewed publications.

He has made numerous national and international presentations and published many peer review articles in all aspects of quantitative echocardiography, coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, heart rate variation and valvular heart disease.
