Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a sophisticated diagnostic imaging technique that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed, cross-sectional images of the internal structures of the body.

Unlike other imaging methods, MRI scans do not use ionising radiation, making them a safer option for many patients. MRI is often used to examine the brain, spinal cord, joints, muscles, heart, and various internal organs.

At New Victoria Hospital, our patients have access to advanced MRI diagnostic examinations that allow them to experience a straightforward pathway from first consultation to diagnosis and treatment. Whether you are referred by your GP or Consultant, our imaging services are designed to deliver accurate results as efficiently and comfortably as possible.

Here at New Victoria Hospital, our dedicated team of Consultant Radiologists and experienced Radiographers are committed to delivering exceptional care for patients attending our MRI facilities.

From your initial referral through to scanning and reporting, our radiology teams ensure that every part of your MRI scan experience is seamless and supported.

What is an MRI Scan?

MRI is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that captures high-resolution images of the body's internal structures. During an MRI scan, the patient lies inside a scanner with a strong magnetic field, which aligns the protons in the body.

Radio waves are then used to disturb this alignment, and sensors pick up the energy released as the protons realign. These signals are converted into detailed images by a computer, allowing clinicians to build a clear view of tissues, organs and any abnormalities.

The procedure usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the area being scanned. It is painless, although some patients may find remaining still for the duration of the scan slightly uncomfortable. To ensure patient comfort, the scanner at New Victoria Hospital is both wider and shorter than conventional MRI scanners, making it ideal for those who experience claustrophobia.
