Biography

Mr Ruwan Wimalasundera is a Consultant Obstetrician & Fetal Medicine Specialist and the Lead for Maternity at University College London Hospital.

This is a world-renowned hospital with a tertiary level fetal medicine unit. He is considered one of UKs leading specialist in the management of multiple pregnancies with an international referral base. Prior to his current post he was the Lead for Fetal Medicine at Imperial College Healthcare Trust, based at the Centre for Fetal Care at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital for 10 years and ran the multiple pregnancy service there. He grew up in West London and attended Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, before going on to train in medicine at Kings College School of Medicine, London.

He specialised in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital and subsequently completed his PhD thesis in “Vascular Reactivity in Pre-Eclampsia” at Imperial College London. He was appointed as a consultant at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital in 2003 after having completed his Sub-specialist training in the same unit. He moved to University College London Hospital in 2013, where he manages both low and high risk pregnancies and specializes in the management of multiple pregnancies including complicated monochorionic pregnancies and runs the multiple pregnancy service there. He particularly specializes in the management of Twin Twin Transfusion Syndrome in monochorionic twins; using fetoscopic laser ablation to placental vessels and has referral from all over the UK for this.
