Neurological & Vestibular Physiotherapy

Neurological and vestibular physiotherapy differs from musculoskeletal physiotherapy in many ways. Still providing a hands on experience, neuro physiotherapy focusses very holistically working on normal movement patterns and recovery from neurological disorders.

The neurological and vestibular physiotherapy service at New Victoria Physiotherapy is provided by the team at Heads Up! They are a well established and experienced group specialising in many neurological conditions.

Stroke Rehab

A stroke or CVA (Cerebrovascular Accident) is caused when either a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked by a clot of blood or due to a clogging of the arteries form fatty deposits (Ischaemic stroke) or haemorrhagic strokes can cause weakness down one side of the body (paresis) and problems with balance and co-ordination.

Neuro rehabilitation

Neuro rehabilitation aims to improve function and increase the independence and wellbeing of people who have damage to their nervous system from trauma, diseases or disorders of the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nervous system.   This can include strokes, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, Cerebral Palsy, traumatic head injuries, spinal cord injuries, peripheral neuropathies and anything else that affects the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nervous system.

At Heads Up Neuro Rehab we provide an individualised approach that is person-centred and evidence-based.  A specialist physiotherapist will assess your movement control and discuss your challenges.  This enables us to develop a personalised exercise programme with you as well as providing hands-on treatment.

Facial Palsy

Facial Palsy can occur due to a number of different problems: spontaneously (Bell’s Palsy), infection of the facial nerve (viral – Ramsey Hunt Syndrome, bacterial – Lyme disease), benign growth (Acoustic Neuroma), trauma to the facial nerve or a central cause such as a stroke.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialised form of exercises developed to help problems with dizziness and poor balance.

A specialist physiotherapist will carry out a thorough assessment, they will look at your eye, head and neck movements and assess your balance and walking.  Following this a personalised programme will be provided and updated at subsequent appointments.  A specialist physiotherapist will also carry out an assessment for BPPV and if appropriate provide the correct treatment procedure.

What Should I Bring To My Neurological and Vestibular Physiotherapy Appointment?

Your assessment and neurological physiotherapy treatment will be very hands on. It is therefore important to come wearing comfortable clothing that is easy to move in. Shorts and appropriate footwear are ideal. You may be asked to remove items of clothing to help with assessment. Please mention if you are uncomfortable with this.

On your first neurological and vestibular physiotherapy appointment, please bring any correspondence or scans that you may have. These can be very useful in your assessment and in determining your treatment.
