Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a procedure to examine the cervix to find out whether there are any abnormal cells. Colposcopy may be needed if there is unexplained bleeding, an inflamed cervix or growths such as polyps and cysts, often identified in a routine cervical smear test. Colposcopy enables the identification of any such abnormalities and decisions can then be made on whether any treatment is needed. A LLETZ or loop diathermy is the most common treatment to remove any abnormal cells found and can be carried out during the colposcopy.

The procedure is carried out by a specialised Gynaecology Consultant, called Colposcopist, in our Colposcopy Suite at New Victoria Hospital.
