Experiencing a seizure, also known as a fit, for the first time can be frightening and unexpected. Our First Fit Clinic provides rapid access to specialist neurological assessment for patients who have experienced a first seizure and need answers quickly.

Whether you require investigation for epilepsy or assessment of another possible cause, our dedicated clinic offers expert diagnosis, fast access to MRI scanning, and a clear pathway to ongoing care. Led by experienced consultant neurologists, the service is designed to help patients receive the care they need without unnecessary delays.

What is a fit?

A fit, also known as a seizure, occurs when there is a sudden disturbance in the electrical activity of the brain. Seizures can affect people in different ways.

Not everyone who experiences a seizure has epilepsy. In fact, a first seizure can occur for a number of reasons, and some people will never experience a second one.

As the causes can vary, a specialist assessment is essential to determine whether further investigation or treatment is needed.

What are the symptoms of a seizure?

Seizures can present differently from person to person. Common symptoms may include:

  • Loss of consciousness or awareness
  • Sudden collapse
  • Uncontrolled jerking or shaking movements
  • Staring episodes or appearing unresponsive
  • Confusion or memory loss
  • Sudden muscle stiffness
  • Unusual sensations, such as strange smells, tastes, or visual disturbances
  • Temporary difficulty speaking or understanding speech
  • Extreme tiredness following an episode

In some cases, symptoms may last only a few seconds, while others may take longer to recover from.

What can cause a first seizure?

Although epilepsy is one possible cause of a seizure, there are many other conditions that can produce similar symptoms.

Potential causes for a first fit include:

  • Epilepsy
  • Head injury
  • Stroke or transient neurological events
  • Brain infections
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Severe stress
  • Low blood sugar levels
  • Certain medications or drug interactions
  • Alcohol withdrawal
  • Underlying heart conditions
  • Metabolic or hormonal imbalances

Sometimes, despite thorough investigation, no specific cause can be identified.

First fit - what happens next?

Following a first seizure, it is important to be assessed by a specialist as soon as possible. A New Victoria neurologist consultant will review your symptoms, medical history, and any factors that may have contributed to the episode.

During your appointment, your consultant may discuss:

  • What happened before, during, and after the seizure
  • Any symptoms you experienced beforehand
  • Your medical history
  • Family history of neurological conditions
  • Any medications you are taking

Further investigations may be recommended to help identify the cause of the seizure and assess the risk of future episodes. Further investigations may include an MRI scan to identify structural abnormalities, an electroencephalogram (EEG) to identify patterns associated with epilepsy and other neurological conditions, blood tests, or cardiac investigations.

Why is a First Fit assessment important?

Even if you feel completely well after a seizure, it is important not to ignore the episode.

A First FIt Clinic assessment can help:

  • Identify the cause of the seizure
  • Determine whether epilepsy is present
  • Assess the risk of future seizures
  • Rule out other neurological or medical conditions
  • Guide decisions regarding treatment and monitoring
  • Provide reassurance and clarity about your symptoms

Early assessment can also help patients receive appropriate advice regarding work, driving, and everyday activities.

What happens at a first seizure clinic?

A first seizure clinic, also known as a first fit clinic, provides specialist assessment and access to investigations that can help determine why a seizure occurred.

At New Victoria Hospital, your care is tailored to your individual needs. Following your consultation, your consultant will arrange appropriate investigations and explain the next steps in your diagnosis and treatment plan.

While many patients receive reassurance that their seizure was an isolated event, others may require ongoing monitoring, follow-up appointments, or treatment for an underlying neurological condition.
