Paediatric ENT is a speciality of medicine that looks at the diagnosis, treatment, and care of ear, nose and throat conditions in infants, children, and adolescents.
A paediatric ENT specialist will assess and treat a wide range of conditions such as glue ear, tonsillitis, enlarged adenoids, allergies, sleep apnoea, airway problems, and hearing difficulties.
At New Victoria Hospital, our Paediatric ENT specialists provide expert care for children from infancy through to adolescence. Our aim is to ensure every family accessing our services has a positive, child-friendly experience and receives a high standard of family-centred care.
What is Children's ENT?
Children’s ENT focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of ear, nose and throat conditions in children up to 18 years of age.
Our consultants understand how ENT illnesses affect growing bodies and provide tailored care to support children’s health at every stage of development.

What common conditions are treated within Children’s ENT?
- Glue Ear – Fluid collects in the middle ear behind the eardrum, causing hearing loss, repeated earache or infections, and sometimes discharge.
- Allergies – Tests are performed to diagnose and manage hay fever, dust, pet and nasal allergies.
- Airway restrictions – Problems such as enlarged adenoids or obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) can lead to noisy breathing, snoring, or disturbed sleep. Untreated OSA can also affect a child’s concentration, behaviour and growth.
- Speech and language disorders – Some speech problems may be linked to hearing loss, enlarged tonsils/adenoids, or structural differences. Hearing loss is the most common reversible cause, and early ENT treatment can make a big difference.
- Nose and sinus conditions – Sinusitis, nasal blockage, frequent nosebleeds, and congenital conditions such as choanal atresia (a nasal passage blockage).
- Hearing conditions – Hearing loss in children may arise from glue ear, recurrent infections, structural issues, or congenital causes. Early diagnosis is vital for speech and learning development.
- Ear infections – Infections such as middle ear (acute or chronic) and outer ear ('swimmer’s ear'). These can cause pain, fever, discharge, and hearing problems, and can recur if not properly assessed and treated by a paediatric ENT specialist.
- Excess earwax – Can cause discomfort or hearing loss when impacted. If drops don’t help, earwax can be removed safely using microsuction, which is a well-tolerated alternative to syringing, especially in children.
- Tonsillitis – Infection of the tonsils can cause pain, fever and difficulty swallowing. If persistent, surgery may be needed to remove the tonsils.
- Enlarged adenoidectomy – Enlarged adenoids that may cause nasal blockage, recurrent ear infections, or sleep-disordered breathing might might require surgical removal.
- Tongue tie (ankyloglossia) – Infants and children with tongue tie may have feeding or speech difficulties. Assessment and frenulotomy can improve feeding and speech outcomes.

Coblation® Intracapsular Tonsillectomy
At New Victoria Hospital, our Paediatric ENT surgeons offer Coblation® intracapsular tonsillectomy, a minimally invasive technique using radiofrequency energy at low temperatures. This preserves surrounding tissue, improves outcomes and promotes faster, less painful recovery.
