What Does Shockwave Therapy Involve?

Shockwave therapy is a safe, highly effective, non-invasive treatment used in the management of soft tissue injuries, such as Achilles tendinopathy. Shockwave therapy uses acoustic waves carrying high energy to target pain and damaged tissue, promoting regeneration and repair of tendons, bones, and muscle.

When applied to the body, shockwave therapy creates a localised, intense vibration causing a controlled inflammatory response which stimulates a healing reaction at the injury site.

Are There Any Risks?

Shockwave therapy may not be appropriate for certain individuals including those with:

  • Cortisone injections administered in the weeks preceding shockwave therapy
  • Blood-thinning medication.
  • Pacemakers
  • Pregnancy

Shockwave therapy can cause discomfort and slight bruising immediately after application. You should inform your physiotherapist of any irritation to the skin or worsening of symptoms.

Are There Any Costs?

The cost of Shockwave therapy is covered by most major insurers, though you should obtain pre-authorisation before booking your treatment.

Shockwave therapy is available for Self Pay patients at a cost of £100 per 30-minute session of combined Shockwave & Physiotherapy treatment. A minimum of 3 sessions is usually required.
