What is Paediatric Orthopedics?

Paediatric Orthopaedics is a sub-speciality of Orthopaedic medicine that is focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing disorders of the musculoskeletal system, specifically in children. It can sometimes be described as the study of growing bones, joints and muscles as children’s bodies evolve and change throughout the years.

Since children’s bones and joints are still developing, the approach to treatment can differ significantly from that used for adults. Our Paediatric Orthopaedic specialists are trained to handle the unique needs of young patients, addressing everything from growth-related concerns to congenital conditions.

Most Paediatric Orthopaedic conditions are fairly common and will not require specialised treatment, as the majority of cases can be simple variations of normal childhood development and will eventually correct themselves with time. There are some abnormalities which require specialist care from a Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Common Paediatric Orthopaedic Conditions

Common Paediatric Orthopaedic Conditions Include:

  • Growth Plate Injuries - These occur when the growth plates, the areas of developing cartilage at the ends of bones, are damaged, which can disrupt normal bone development in children.
  • Scoliosis, Kyphosis, and Spinal Disorders - Conditions involve abnormal curvature of the spine, including sideways (scoliosis) or forward (kyphosis) curvatures, which can affect posture, movement, and overall health.
  • Hip and Knee Deformities - Congenital or developmental issues affecting the knee and hip, such as hip dysplasia or knee malalignment, including  genu varum (bowlegs) and genu valgum (knock knees).which can lead to pain, limited mobility, and potential joint damage.
  • Cerebral Palsy - A group of disorders affecting movement and muscle tone, caused by brain damage before, during, or shortly after birth, often leading to difficulty with walking, coordination, and posture.
  • Clubfoot - A congenital deformity where a baby’s foot is turned inward or downward, making it difficult to walk or move the foot normally.
  • Perthes' Disease - Also known as Osteochondritis of the Hip. A condition where the blood supply to the hip joint is temporarily disrupted, causing the bone to weaken and potentially collapse.
  • Bone Fractures and Sports Injuries - Broken bones and soft tissue injuries, such as sprains or strains, resulting from physical activities or accidents, common in active children involved in sports.
  • Congenital Deformities - Conditions present at birth where certain bones or joints do not develop as expected, which can lead to mobility issues and may require early intervention to prevent further complications.

Our approach ensures the safest, most effective treatments for young patients, whether through non-invasive methods or when surgery is necessary.

We are equipped with advanced diagnostic tools such as X-rays, MRI, CT, and ultrasound imaging, allowing us to make accurate diagnoses and develop effective treatment plans for young patients. These technologies enable our Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeons to accurately diagnose and plan effective treatments accordingly.
