Rheumatology is a medical speciality that focuses on the musculoskeletal system. It consists of the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic conditions which cause pain, discomfort, stiffness and swelling in the joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bones. Many rheumatic conditions are autoimmune disorders, like inflammatory arthritis.

At New Victoria Hospital, our specialist Rheumatology Consultants, also known as Rheumatologists, can help diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions impacting the musculoskeletal system.

From the initial consultation with our Rheumatology specialists through to the recovery process, our multidisciplinary team will be on hand to ensure you receive the highest standard of care during your stay with us.

What is Rheumatology?

Rheumatology is the branch of medicine dedicated to diagnosing, managing, and treating a variety of musculoskeletal and autoimmune conditions. These conditions, often referred to as rheumatic diseases, can affect the joints, muscles, bones, and connective tissues, sometimes leading to chronic pain, inflammation, and reduced mobility.

Rheumatology treatments

During an initial consultation with one of our Rheumatologists, they will assess your condition and create a personalised treatment plan. Your rheumatic symptoms and how you experience them are unique so that is why we will ensure you get the most personalised treatment possible. Depending on the condition you are experiencing, you may be offered one of the following Rheumatology treatments:

Pain medicine:

To help relieve pain and discomfort caused by your condition, one of our Rheumatologists may recommend pain medication such as analgesics and anti-inflammatories as part of your Rheumatology treatment journey.

Disease modifying antirheumatic medications (DMARDs):

These therapies can slow the progression of rheumatic conditions like inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. They can also help prevent permanent joint damage.

Biologic therapies:

Developed from blood, proteins and viruses, biologics are used in many rheumatic conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and axial spondyloarthropathy and can stop certain immune responses responsible for causing joint inflammation and damage.

Physiotherapy:

As part of your treatment you may be referred to our physiotherapy team who will look to help improve joint function, mobility, and strength within the affected area.

Injections:

Rheumatologists may recommend local injections into joints of soft tissues to help relieve your symptoms

Lifestyle advice and changes:

A Consultant may advise on types of exercise, dietary recommendations, and tips on how to protect your joints to support your condition.

Referral to specialists:

If conservative Rheumatology treatment methods are not sufficient in providing relief to the patient and surgical intervention is needed, our Rheumatologists will refer you to our Orthopaedic Consultants for more specialised treatment.
