We are looking for a Chief Pharmacist to join our Pharmacy team. 

The post holder will have overall responsibility, as the named individual, for the safe and secure handling of medicines at New Victoria Hospital, ensuring a high quality, safe pharmacy service across the Hospital. 

As Medication Safety Officer, the successful applicant will hold responsibility for medication safety, promoting the safe use of medicines, and also, improving quality of reporting. The role will include demonstrating leadership in leading the Pharmacy team, as well as, advising, supporting and educating other clinicians in safe, cost-effective medicines usage.

The Chief Pharmacist will be committed to both managing the Pharmacy team and undertaking clinical shifts to meet the clinical needs of the department.

Some of the duties include:

Patient Care

  • Ensuring the pharmacy service puts the patient first, including in the provision of information about medicines and support with effective use of medicines.
  • Ensuring medicines are optimised throughout the patient pathway, starting at pre-op assessment clinic, through to transfer of care / discharge.

Clinical 

  • Ensuring medicine reconciliation is undertaken with 24-48 hours of admission and compile relevant patient's medication history to facilitate a quality assurance of the prescription chart. 
  • Communicating recommendations on medicines optimisation to doctors, nurses and other relevant healthcare professionals. 
  • Performing dispensary duties as part of the clinical pharmacy rota and the on call pharmacist service.

Policy and Service Management

  • Ensuring that medication safety has a high profile within pharmacy and throughout the Hospital and that there is a clear vision for pharmacy services in ensuring the optimal use of medicines.
  • Advising on potential service developments within own clinical area of work, and any associated procedural changes arising from suggested initiatives.
  • Ensuring that medicines are handled safely and securely throughout the medicines pathway including, procurement/obtaining medicines, receipt, issue/distribution/dispensing, storage, near-patient preparation, administration and transport.

 

Requirements

 

Qualifications & Knowledge

  • Pharmacist Registrant of the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • Evidence of continuing
  • Clinical Pharmacy Certificate; desirable
  • Member of the UK Clinical Pharmacy Association; desirable
  • Management Training; desirable

Experience

  • Experience in patient safety initiatives / implementation of patient safety alerts
  • Proven experience of successful team management / change management
  • Good knowledge of budgeting / financial management
  • Recent Acute Independent Sector Medication Safety Officer (MSO); desirable

Skills & Aptitude

  • Leadership skills to motivate team
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Self-directed for quality improvement
