An Elbow Arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) is performed to diagnose and treat problems in the elbow joint. It involves examining the inside of the elbow joint using a miniature camera inserted through small incisions in the skin.

At New Victoria Hospital, our dedicated and multidisciplinary team of Orthopaedic Consultants will support you throughout your healing journey, from the initial consultation to the recovery process. We specialise in the latest cutting-edge treatments to alleviate pain and restore elbow function.

When is Arthroscopy of the Elbow Recommended?

When is Arthroscopy of the Elbow Recommended?

Our expert Orthopaedic Surgeons may recommend elbow arthroscopy to:

  • Remove loose cartilage, bone fragments, or scar tissue
  • Treat conditions such as tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
  • Address cartilage damage, including osteochondral defects
  • Release stiffness or contractures within the elbow joint
  • Manage and treat early-stage arthritis
  • Assist in fractures fixation

The Procedure

An elbow arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) usually takes around 30 minutes. Before the procedure, a surgeon will review your medical history, conduct appropriate diagnostic tests beforehand, such as X-rays or MRIs, and discuss the potential risks and benefits.

Various anaesthetic techniques are available. In most cases, the operation will be performed under a general anaesthetic. Still, sometimes a nerve block is used, where local anaesthetics and other painkillers are injected near the major nerves to your arm.

Once the anaesthesia takes effect, small incisions (called portals) are made around the elbow joint. These portals allow the surgeon to insert the arthroscope and surgical instruments necessary.

A camera is inserted through the incisions to provide a clear view of the elbow joint, relaying images to a monitor. A saline solution expands the joint, improving visibility and allowing the surgeon to perform the necessary repairs.

Depending on the condition being treated, the surgeon may remove loose fragments, smooth cartilage, release tight structures, or repair damaged tissues.

Once the procedure is complete, the saline solution is drained, and the small incisions are closed using sutures or adhesive strips. You will then be taken to the recovery room, where you will be monitored as the anaesthesia wears off. In many cases, patients can go home the same day.

What are the Benefits of an Elbow Arthroscopy?

Elbow arthroscopy allows your surgeon to diagnose and treat common elbow conditions at the same time, without the need for large incisions. This minimally invasive approach leads to:

  • Smaller wounds, resulting in less post-operative pain and swelling
  • Faster recovery times
  • Improved joint function and mobility
  • Minimal scarring and a lower risk of complications

Recovery Times

Recovery timelines vary depending on the specifics of the elbow surgery and individual patient factors. Most patients should be able to go home the same day. A member of our dedicated physiotherapy team may give you exercises and advice to help you to recover from the operation.

It can take a few weeks to get back to normal activities, and you may be advised to wear a sling for a short period to support the elbow while it heals. Regular exercise should help you return to normal activities as soon as possible. Before exercising, ask our Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon or your GP for advice.

Most people will see a major improvement after their elbow arthroscopy, but it will take time for the pain to lessen and movement to increase.
