A Transperineal Prostate Biopsy is an Urology procedure that takes samples from the prostate gland for the purpose of detecting and diagnosing prostate cancer. This type of MRI-guided prostate biopsy combines MRI and ultrasound images.

What is a Fusion-guided Transperineal (template) Prostate Biopsy?
A fusion-guided transperineal (template) prostate biopsy begins with a needle inserted into the prostate. The needle is guided through the prostate using MRI and Ultrasound imagery to collect small tissue samples from the prostate. These samples are then tested to look for prostate cancer in the patient.
Transperineal (template) Prostate Biopsy is not a treatment for prostate cancer. It is a diagnostic procedure for prostate cancer and for locating any specific areas that may be affected.
How is a Transperineal Prostate Biopsy performed?
This procedure takes approximately half an hour, and is done under a general anaesthetic. Most men return home the same day.
Prior to your procedure, an MRI scan is performed to determine which areas of the prostate are showing anomalies. These images are then superimposed with live ultrasound images taken during the procedure using a specialised software.
The transperineal method of prostate biopsy sees an ultrasound probe placed in the rectum to clearly visualise the prostate on a nearby screen. The surgeon will then insert the needle through the perineum (the area of skin between the rectum and testicles).
Using a special grid and MRI images to guide the needle to the precise location of the suspicious area identified on the MRI, the surgeon will take a number of tissue samples from the prostate using the fine needle. These will then be sent to a lab to be looked at by specialists under a microscope to identify if the cells are cancerous.
How long is it to get your results back from a Transperineal Prostate Biopsy?

Why would I need a Transperineal Prostate Biopsy?
Your Urologist may recommend a fusion-guided transperineal (template) prostate biopsy if you are at risk of prostate cancer. The following factors are the most common for reasons for a Urologist to recommend you for a transperineal prostate biopsy:
- Suspicious areas found on an MRI scan of the prostate
- Abnormal lumps or areas found within a routine prostate examination
- A high blood test result, specifically known as prostate specific antigen or PSA
While these factors are areas of concern, they do not always directly correlate with the patient having prostate cancer. These factors can be caused by an infection or inflammation within the prostate and not necessarily cancer.
However, a transperineal prostate biopsy may be recommended by one of our specialist Urologists to be performed to rule out the possibility of prostate cancer.
Recovery after Transperineal Prostate Biopsy
Recovery after a Transperineal (template) Prostate Biopsy tends to be minimal, and low risk.
The following are common low-level complications which can occur as a result of the procedure:
- Hematuria or hematospermia - Blood in the urine or semen. This is quite common and blood in the urine will usually clear up after 3 days.
- Mild pain and/or discomfort in the operation area - This can usually be managed with painkillers.
- Infection in the operation area - Antibiotics will be prescribed to prevent infections.
- Difficulty passing urine - Urinary blockage and infections are rare and, in most cases, any urinary issues are temporary.
